why did humans live in small religious/tribal cults hating outsiders like kafiristan in chitral and cults in America or African tribes for example until very recently when modernity gave way to reason and with the advent of worldwide religions like Islam/Christianity.

Is it something in our nature or something else that we used to group like this and hate others. Is it based on fear or security or instinctual drives.

This is the subject of anthropology and psychology.

Not only in Islam and Christianity, but also in the expeditions of Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan, people found an opening to know each other. But people tend to stay in their groups. The more they know each other, the thinner the alienness.
