In 24:30 Allah says that you are responsible for the bad that happens to you. Does this mean that every bad thing that happens to us is because of our bad deeds? The what’s the concept of Allah testing us through hardship? If everything is a consequence of our wrongdoings then it is right to say that we are being punished and not tested

If this was the case then prophets would never face hardships, innocent children would never suffer, good people would always live easy lives.

The verse is telling us that:

MANY hardships in our lives our natural consequences of human actions cuz we’ve been given free will.

Not all, not always, but Many.

This is cause-and-effect realtionship: Corruption –> poverty

    Injustice –> social collapse

    Arrogance –> broken relationships

And read the full verse, at the end it’s written:

    “He pardons much”

Meaning that allah doesn’t always fully hold us accountable. Similarly many consequences are reduced and delayed and many mistakes are overlooked.

If these verse were about punishment this last part of the verse wouldn’t make any sense

In islam hardships can be categorized into 3 parts:

Hardships as natural consequences:- means poor choice would result into poor outcomes or injustices would result into instability. This isn’t punishment this is how life works natural cause-and-effect situation.

Hardships as test’s:- this means that this is a different category where hardship comes without doing anything wrong and often happen to mamy people are meant for growth, elevation and exposure of inner strength.

For example u can take prophets they were tested the most, and if it meant punishment then they would’ve been the most sinful people.

Hardships as warning and correction:- this mean that sometimes hard times come to shake the person so he can wake up to the reality or maybe to stop him from going to a destructive path or to force reflection.

This is not punishment and also not a test of innocence either we can call it moral course correction.

And in the verse last part he says

‘He pardons much’ means even then he doesn’t fully enforce consequences.

And tbh we should think of Allah as someone very intelligent and very just being not someone who is very strict or scary(i used to have same view but eventually it changed)

    I hope this helps u

      Yes it helped a lot

I would like to ask how can one then distinguish between if it’s a test or a consequence of what they did. And if someone presents me the same question because I have been asked this by someone how am I able to satisfy them because they say that this is written in Quran and we are only going to follow it unless you show some other ayat that explains what you say

      Listen brother

      Every hardship has 2 parts:

How it happened and how we deal with it

How it happened: this is out of our control weather we want it or not it’ll happen cuz in quran Allah has said in many places that we’ll be tested with hardships

“We will surely test you with fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives, and fruits…”

      (Surah al-Baqarah 2:155)

“He created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deeds.”

      (Surah al-Mulk 67:2)

“Do people think they will be left to say ‘We believe’ and not be tested?”

      (Surah al-‘Ankabūt 29:2)

Now the issue is that we are humans when something happens to us we are desperate to lable that situation ‘ was it my fault?’ or ‘ was it not my fault?’

This is human nature nothing wrong with it we just want to categorize our situations in one of thes option so we can unburden the load of uncertainty but thats not how life work

Living in the uncertainty itself is a test of patience and endurance and a difficult one.

U asked how can we know if the hardship is a test or a consequence

But bro it cannot be decided here lemme give u an example

A wealthy man suddenly becomes poor

It could be due to natural cause effect he did a mistake and all his company got bankrupt

Or it could also be due to him earning it the wrong way by haram methods

Or just some external reasons he got sick or any other issue

Now in all these three situation it could be a consequence or just a pure test but this isn’t the whole thing

Here comes the 2nd part of the hardship ‘how a person deals with it’

If that man just sit there and start blaming other or external issues and use other haram ways to get back his company

Then the hardship functions as a means of punishment

And if he fears Allah and realizes that it was due to him doing things haram way or it was due to a mistake or some external reasons and keep trying and keep going through that rough time of his life

Then the hardship functions as a means of elevation

      I hope u r getting it

Ik when we are in tough situation we are just desperate to know if it was my fault or the situation was bad so we can either but the blame on the situation or just feel guilty for being a bad person

Allah doesn’t simplify reality for the comfort. It describes ot preserve the truth

      In easy words

      Consequences explains how hardships come

Test explains what the hardship asks of you now

We humans are responsible beings not the victim of fate

If allah only labeled the hardship with test then we humans wouldn’t have taken it seriously and deny the responsibility

If it was just labeled as consequences then people would’ve drowned in guilt

Our response to hardships decides what the hardship does to us

      I hope this helps

Dont search for labeling your situation Allah wants u to stay in that discomfort and hold both the truths for your growth not to harm u or punish u

      Its 42:30

      Ash-shura

“Whatever affliction befalls you is because of what your own hands have committed. And He pardons much.”

“Whatever good befalls you is from Allah and whatever evil befalls you is from yourself. Surah” Nisa verse 79

If we say that we have been given free will and because of our actions evil befalls us then why Allah says that good is only from Him can our actions not lead to goodness for ourselves? Why are we only responsible for evil?
Commentators say that because Allah is perfect so no evil in any case is associated towards Him that’s why he says that evil is from yourself while goodness is from me

When in quran goodness is attributed to Allah it usually means by what allah has given to us

It’s not Allah vs humans, good/evil battle its us vs us and allah provided the whole setup for the tournament.

Allah made this whole world a perfect balance and equilibrium of good and bad and interlinked everything with each other in it and then put us inside it and gave us free will and told us to go live it.

We humans live our lives make our decisions using our free wills

It isn’t that humans are bad it’s the actions and missuse of free will and the structure of this world

      For example

      Take rain as an example

      What happens?

Farmer A prepare the land seed it plow it

      Then rain>crops>food

Farmer B doesn’t prepare the land let the land rot

      Then rain>flooding>loss

      Was the rain bad here?

      Similarly

      Allah sends guidance

Is guidance good? Yes it is

Person A listen to it understand it applies it

      Guidance>Peace>stability

Person B ignores it twist it

      Guidance> guilt>resentment>harm

      Was the guidance bad here?

Now connect it to free will.

Our free will operates inside the system Allah created

We don’t create life, ability, opportunity, rain, guidance

      We direct them

Thats why quran says it in this way so humans don’t say “i created all my success” and also don’t say “allah forced my failure”.

Allah doesn’t interfere in this world directly he interfere through his already built structure of life that’s how hardships come.

      A person earns money

Allah doesn’t drop it from the sky

Allah gives the person health intelligence society structure

And he then is able to earn it

And when we offer gratitude we aren’t thanking allah for earning us money we are thanking him for the ability and the structure of life he provided.

      So in conclusion

Allah is the SOURCE of all good

Humans are the USERS of that good

And EVIL happens when the good is misused

      I hope this helps.
