  • Praying Asr Or Fajr Just Before The Time Ends

Posted by Saba Bilal on February 11, 2026 at 2:30 am

I know praying Fajr or Asr just before (10-15 min I think) sunrise or sunset is impermissible but if for some reason one is not able to pray before that time, should one pray their farz namaz in that 10-15 min that are normally impermissible or wait for the impermissible time to pass ( such as when Maghrib begins in case of asr) ?

I think it is permissible to pray Fajr or Asr if you can complete just one rakat before the time ends. This is in accordance with the Hadees that one can complete a Namaz even if the time for it has passed during that Namaz. So if you’ve completed one rakat of Fajr Namaz and it is time for sunrise you can complete that Namaz. Exactly the same for Asr or any other Namaz.

The times of sunrise and sunset are prohibited for prayer because these moments were historically associated with sun‑worship. Out of concern for avoiding anything that resembles polytheistic practices, the Prophet (sws) emphasized strict observance of these prohibited periods. He therefore instructed that after performing Fajr, one should not pray again until the sun has risen, and after performing Asr, one should not pray until the sun has set (https://sunnah.com/bukhari:586).

For this reason, it is recommended not to delay Fajr close to sunrise or Asr close to sunset. However, from a legal standpoint, the valid time for Asr extends until sunset, and the valid time for Fajr extends until sunrise. Thus, if a person begins their prayer before the actual moment of sunrise or sunset, the prayer is legally valid (https://sunnah.com/bukhari:579).

But like what if there’s 2 minutes to sunrise, should we start our Fajr prayer or not, or wait till the sun has risen?

In this case, it is instructed to say the prayer, even if you could perform only one rakat within the time. The prayer will be considered done.
