  • Clarification On Post-Delivery Bleeding (Nifaas), Istihaza, & The 40-Day Ruling

Assalamu alaikum,I am seeking clarification regarding post-delivery bleeding (nifaas) and prayer, as I am struggling to fully understand the reasoning behind the rulings. As per our understanding:

A woman does not pray during menstruation (hayd).

After childbirth, a woman does not pray while post-delivery bleeding (nifaas) continues.

Nifaas can stop anytime (e.g., 7–10 days), but the maximum duration mentioned is 40 days.

What I find confusing is the ruling that after 40 days, even if bleeding continues, it is no longer considered nifaas but instead classified as istihaza, and the woman is required to:

    Perform ghusl,

    Resume salah,

    Pray while bleeding,

Change pads / maintain cleanliness between prayers.

    My questions are:

What is the Islamic basis (Qur’an and authentic Hadith) for fixing 40 days as the maximum limit of nifaas?

How is istihaza fundamentally different from menstrual or nifaas blood, especially when the bleeding may physically appear similar?

Why does bleeding prevent prayer in hayd and nifaas, but not in istihaza?

What is the wisdom or reasoning behind obligating prayer while bleeding in istihaza, and requiring pad changes and wudu for each prayer?

Are there differences of opinion among scholars or madhhabs on this issue, particularly regarding the 40-day limit?

I am asking this sincerely to understand the logic and evidences behind these rulings so that I can follow them with conviction rather than confusion.JazakAllah

Fuqha adopted this opinion of 40 days for Nifas on the basis of a hadith which is not sound (Tirmizi 139). However, it is purely based on experience. If a woman expereince bleeing byond 40 days, it is Nifas
