ZAKAT ON JEWELRY GIFTED BY PARENTS
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,
I would like to seek your guidance regarding the obligation of Zakat on gold owned by my wife.
At the time of our marriage, her parents gifted her approximately 150 tolas of gold. Out of this:
- 20 tolas are in the form of gold bars, which were given with the intention that they may be sold in case of need.
- The remaining 130 tolas are in the form of jewelry.
Over the past 12 years, my wife has worn this jewelry only once or twice in total. After that, it has remained kept in a bank locker and is not in regular use.
I would like to ask:
- Is Zakat applicable on the entire 150 tolas of gold?
- Is there any difference in ruling between the gold bars (kept as savings/investment) and the jewelry (which is rarely used)?
- Does occasional or minimal use of jewelry affect the obligation of Zakat?
I would be grateful for your guidance.
