When a person dies they enter the stage known as Barzakh (an intermediate realm between this life and the Day of Judgment). In this state, the connection with the physical world is essentially cut off.

Because of that, the deceased do not continuously observe what is happening in the world, nor do they feel ongoing emotional pain from the problems of their relatives who are still alive. The world of the living and the world of Barzakh operate under different systems, and the dead are not given regular awareness of earthly events.

However, this does not mean that relationships become meaningless. The living can still pray for the deceased, give charity in their name, and do good deeds that may benefit them by Allah’s mercy. But the reverse—where the dead constantly feel the suffering of their family in this world—is not something supported by the Qur’an.

So the deceased do not remain emotionally connected to worldly events in real time.

They are in a different phase of existence awaiting the Day of Judgment.

The benefit that continues between the two worlds mainly comes through prayers and good deeds done by the living.
