If I am supporting an adopted orphan whom I treat as my daughter/sister and spending money on her upbringing, like schooling etc, can I count this money towards zakat?

Salam @Idris sb, spending on adopted orphan’s well-being and upbringing falls under zakatable categories.

    Thank you

I think it depends upon one’s intention at the time of adopting the child. If one adopts a child with the intention of helping him/her out, then I’m sure whatever money you spend on her can be deducted from your zakat. But if one’s intention was to have a child around because they couldn’t conceive, then I think the matter becomes questionable.

Good point. Dr. SS. responded to it by saying “Yes, absolutely” but I see your point also (the intention aspect).
