    According to,

    اِنَّا عَرَضۡنَا الۡاَمَانَةَ عَلَى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ وَالۡجِبَالِ فَاَبَيۡنَ اَنۡ يَّحۡمِلۡنَهَا وَاَشۡفَقۡنَ مِنۡهَا وَ حَمَلَهَا الۡاِنۡسَانُؕ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ ظَلُوۡمًا جَهُوۡلًا ۙ‏

(33:72) We offered the trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to carry it and were afraid of doing so; but man carried it. Surely he is wrong-doing, ignorant.

The trust talked about in this verse is of freewill. But doesn’t this imply that only human beings have free will? What about the jinns?

The ayah is not talking about jinns. It’s specifically mentioning the earth, the heavens, and the mountains. The free will of jinns is very clear from other ayahs, for example, the story of Iblees where he ‘chose to’ refuse to the divine command.

Adding onto what Fasial sb. said, freewill is common among Humans, Jinns and Angels but “Khilafat” i.e. Kingdom of Earth is what distinguishes humans from the rest. Since we have very limited information regarding jinns from the Quran but for humans, the whole scheme of testing includes this freewill along with the khilafat of the Earth. This makes the whole scheme more potent and more difficult to stick to the right course at times.

So when Quran is talking about freewill in this verse, it is speaking with that whole scheme in the background that humans have been put through.

Just for clarification: Khilafat would mean اقتدار؟

[Ask them O Prophet (sws) about their baseless denial of the Almighty] and [in order to make them understand Our scheme regarding this world, narrate to them the incident] when your Lord said to the angels: ‘I am going to create someone who will be given the sovereignty of the earth’.[1] (Excerpt from Quran 2:30)

[1] The Arabic word used is ‘خَلِيفَة’. It is evident from 38:26 that just as this word means ‘successor’ and ‘deputy’, it also means ‘a person who has authority without being a deputy or successor of someone’. Giving due consideration to this aspect, I have translated it as ‘sovereign’. There are many examples in the Arabic language of words which are used in a particular shade while being stripped off a part of their original meaning.
