Before commenting on this narration, following points always need to be kept in mind while interpreting the meaning of any Hadith:

First, unless you understand the principles on how to understand Hadith and what is its place within whole framework of religion, you will forever be faced with these predicaments where a point mentioned in a hadith would feel an isolated but complete directive of Islam and sometimes in total contradiction to principles mentioned in Quran which form basis of religion.

Secondly, Ahadith are mostly lacking their context, which means for the most of Ahadith corpus, we have no way of knowing in what context a particular narration was said by the Prophet (sws), and what was said before and after those words so that we can know the exact context of discussion. Therefore, we need to take guidance from Quran and Sunnah which are absolute and complete sources of religion..

Lastly, Ahadith always relate to matters of application related to absolute directives found in Quran and Sunnah. If taken in isolation, we will end up extracting absolute laws from matters of application and thus end up creating a jungle of mess from where it won’t be easy to come out.

To understand these points further, please refer to the following link and watch all the videos (as this is very important in understanding the Farahi Approach, otherwise you will always feel entrapped in contradictions):

Regarding the aforementioned Hadith, following points might be helpful in understanding its content:

This is an advice right in accordance with fitrat/nature of Animals. Animals are not a thing of trade, their trade shouldn’t become one’s business and should be naturally left to their fitrat/nature, which requires freedom. But if one has to keep them due to any reason, one should take care of all their needs and shouldn’t let them suffer and give them their due freedom. There could be circumstances where animals are used not for pleasure but for some genuine need which requires use of their skills (dogs, horses etc.), in that case, there would be some kind of trade involved in their selling and purchase, which would be fine. The same point has been kept in mind in another Hadith of Nisai, which although is Daeef, but when combined with all other Ahadith on this subject, makes perfect sense. In this Hadith, the hunter dogs have been mentioned as an exception (because of the same reason as mentioned above):

    https://sunnah.com/abudawud/24/64

(There are a number of ahadith touching this topic actually)

To conclude, it is recommended to not keep animals for mere pleasure and one should not make them an item of trade and every attempt should be made to give them an environment that reconciles with their fitrat/nature. And if someone has to keep them for any reason, they should be given utmost care and protection and could be traded for their skillful use, not for mere pleasure of human beings. Of course this is just my opinion, one has every right to disagree with it.

So we can keep a cat as a pet who can roam around freely whenever she wants. Maybe not at night because it’s dangerous because of the cold

You can, It’s just that you need to be mindful of their rights and their freedom.

So, just to extend a bit- it is not allowed to be a cat breeder? Eg someone who would breed their cats every year and then sell the kittens?

Obviously the hadeeth itself can’t make it haraam- so would it just be makruh?
