What is the purpose of a big punishment like crucifixion if it is not in public? It seems that this MUST be in public to keep the spirit and common sense of the directive alive.

This is a follow up from a recent discussion to do with hudud tribal and modern society:

Hudood punishments are Divine punishments imposed on Muslims for breaking of their oath with Allah (this is their only primary purpose).

Being a deterrent for others is a secondary thing for which no bar has been placed to publicly carry them out or do so privately or in a small gathering. This is something to be decided by state keeping in mind the societal pros and cons of carrying them out in public.

    Please see this as well:

Surely taqteel means to kill them in an exemplary manner. What is the point of this exemplary manner of killing when no one can see it? Is it just to induce pain by means of eg crucifixion? Surely crucifixion itself ensues that it be public as that’s how crucifixion has always been
