Why do we have any reason to believe that the verses in the Quran commanding to pray or fast are commanding US directly? Doesn’t it make more sense that it would be specific to the people that it was revealed to?

kutiba alaikum siyam(Fasting has been prescribed for you).

    –Quran 2:183

kutiba alaikum qitaal(Fighting has been prescribed for you).

    –Quran 2:216

How do we diffrentiate which one is for us? Why is the context of the fighting sought out and made specifc- but fasting isn’t?

Another example could be that any verse that says ‘establish the salah at this time’. How do we know that this was not only specific for that generation?

Another example is ‘if you love Allah follow me’. This is specifc to the Prophet SAWS. So why would anything else in the Quran not be sepcific to him or his companions etc?

Some people say that the only way to be consistent is by assuming that all of it is in context specific to the generation of Muhammad SAWS.

In Quran God says I created man and Jinn for his worship. So all the directives of worship are generic in nature.

Fighting is subject to circumstances. Fighting against kufr is not possible now since we can’t say who is denying knowingly. this knowledge comes from God to his prophet .We find the requisite missing here that is why we stop acting upon it. Quran says that fate of nation is decided when Rasul comes to them. We find that we don’t have Rasul with us now. We can’t decide the fate of a nation now.

When the cause or foundation is missing we don’t act upon a directive and when cause is generic we extend the scope a directive.

They would argue how do you know what is generic. To these people all the directives of how to pray fast (specifics) are specific to the prophet ‎﴾ﷺ﴿. They would say the generic theme of Islam are just the ethical and moral side

The debate of specific and generic directives depends on the cause of the directive. if cause is generic in nature, the directive will be generic or if cause is specific, directive will be specific. we may differ at some points, but every point of view needs to provide argument and reasoning.

Some people argue that all rituals in the Quran are simply imperatives for the nation it was to reveal to and theres no need to make them generic. They say the only generic things should be morals or ethics

As I say before with reference to Quran that all human beings are created to worship God, so when we know that God sent a Shariah of His worship, it becomes our obligation to learn it and act upon it. That is why the prophet, before he completed his conquest of Arabia, sent letters out of Arabia to the kings of his time in the neighboring lands.
