Contributor October 22, 2020 at 5:55 pmIs it the ‘masjid al aqsa’ that prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم saw in his vision? Did it even exist back then?

Contributor October 22, 2020 at 6:42 pm[4] The actual words are: الَّذِيْ بارَكْنَا حَوْلَهُ. After Abraham’s migration from Babylon, God chose two locations where two mosques were constructed at His own behest and were made the centres of monotheism for the whole world. One of them is the Arabian peninsula and the other is Palestine. The former is very barren and infertile while the latter is extremely lush and fertile. For this reason, it is called “the land of milk and honey” in ancient scriptures. The words of the Quran الَّذِيْ بارَكْنَا حَوْلَهُ point to this land and in this way explicitly determine that the distant mosque being referred to is the mosque of Jerusalem.<div>
</div><div>What is the proof that 1. This mosque was made and that 2. The golden dome is this mosque?</div> -

It was destroyed in later years twice (if my memory serves me right) and the only remnant left of that original building is the famous wailing wall.
The Aqsa mosque was built later by Muslims after Palestine was conquered in the time of Umar (rta). Jews claim that some of the original foundations of Bait-ul-Muqaddas have been overlapped by this mosque.

Contributor October 22, 2020 at 6:53 pmWhat shape was this mosque in when Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم visited it. It must have been quite well known- or was it just the same wailing wall of today?
Also what is the proof that dawud عليه السلام and suleiman عليه السلام built such a mosque? I thought that this mosque was built by ibrahim عليه السلام at God’s behest as mentioned in the footnote above

Moderator October 22, 2020 at 7:28 pmThat place has a sanctity as a chosen land of God. The presence or absence of a physical mosque has a secondary value. The land is the mosque chosen by God himself. Those two lands were chosen as center of monotheism. Mosque is a symbol of that decision. Even if there was no mosque physically present at that time, it doesn’t make a difference. That dream was a symbol of transferring custodianship of both mosques to Prophet Muhammad (sws). Termination of rank of Shahdah for Bani-Israel and giving this duty to Bani-Ismael.
Since Quran is very explicit about re-building of Kaaba at the hands of Prophet Abraham (AS) and Prophet Ismael (AS), there is no such explicit details (not to my knowledge) on when was the first mosque built there and whether any first mosque was built by Abraham (AS) himself or not, there is no such thing mentioned. Therefore, we rely on Jewish history in this regard. But we know that Bani-Israel were formally settled In Palestine after rise of Prophet Moses (AS), therefore it is highly probable that first proper structure was built later by Prophets Daud (AS) and Sulaiman (AS).

Contributor October 22, 2020 at 7:32 pmThe first point you made would make sense if the Quran just said something like الى الأرض الاقصى or الى الأرض المقدسة. But it says الى المسجد الأقصى specifically so doesn’t that imply that there was some structure there.
But this doesn’t matter in the grand scheme unless there is some evidence that there was no building at all

Later a separate mosque also built along with the sacred sites of Jews and Christians and bore the name Masjid e Aqsa.
