Is Praying On New Year's Eve A Bidah?
Posted by Saba Madani on December 31, 2020 at 8:56 pmA group of people in our community are planning to pray voluntary salah around midnight tonight( New year’s Eve) to avoid participating in useless activities around that time. Is it considered bida’h in deen?

Member December 31, 2020 at 9:08 pmIt’s not clear from the vedio. They’re not making it as a taqreeb. They’re praying in their homes individually. They’re not making it into a habit or ritual. Just want to spend that time praying instead of watching the ball drop

Bidah or innovation would occur if they made it into an event, invited others to join them, publicized it, or insisted upon it being part of the religion. Simply praying nafil namaz in their own homes is not bidah.

Back in October at the time of halloween there was an event arranged in the masjid , consisted of halaqas, qiyam ul lail etc. They invited others to join it, publicized it and made it into an event. I think they do some kind of program every year almost in every masjid across US on Halloween evening. The purpose is to provide some activity to the youth in the masjid so that they can stay away from participating in Halloween activities. I hope this doesn’t fall in to the bida’h catagory.

If there is no such additional religious affiliation with such events, then there is no harm.

Moderator January 4, 2021 at 4:33 amPurpose of a religious activity should always be religious based on purpose and limits as sanctioned by the Prophet (sws) Himself. If it is affiliated with something over and above what was actually sanctioned (in religious context), then it would count as Bidah. The above mentioned activity doesn’t seem to have any additional religious motive than what has been prescribed originally.
