Surely it can’t be a physical chair since this implies time and space for God. Is it just from the mutashabihaat and implies the governance and authority of God?

Could we say that this type of beautiful imagery of eg angels carrying the throne of Hid should just be taken at face value? A villager will obviously imagine this and feel a feeling of glory and amazement towards God. He WILL imagine it in his mind. And probably there is something like a throne that is being mentioned.

Or- when the principle of ‘there is nothing unto him’ has been given- doesn’t this automatically mean that w emits take everything to do with time and space metaphorically?

No! the kalam will tell based on principles of linguistics whether something has been mentioned as a metaphor or an actual fact with the help of mutashabihaat in case it relates to matters of unseen world.
