Shaving Pubic Hairs
Posted by Muhammad Wasif on January 15, 2021 at 12:10 pmShaving Pubic Hairs is farz in Islam. But what’s the criteria for that. Some say when it reaches the size of a grain of rice. Some say after 40 days. What’s Ghamidi sb take on this?

Moderator January 16, 2021 at 1:25 pm40 days and the grain of rice are to communicate the general sense of length of hair. Once we understand that, we can shave it accordingly.

Member December 3, 2021 at 11:02 pmAsalamualaikum, I was hoping I could ask a couple questions on this topic.
1. Is “pubic hair” defined in any way, or does each person have to use their best judgement as to what parts of hair around their private area falls under pubic hair?
2. Is it mandatory that every last strand of hair under the armpits and on the pubic region is removed, or is it sufficient for a significant majority of this hair to be removed? I mean to ask this question because it can be a pretty time consuming and draining task to identify each single strand of hair.
3. Based on the discussion above, I understand that removal of armpit and pubic hair is a form of worship itself and therefore neglecting it should not be taken lightly (and maybe sinful?). However, it does not have a bearing on the validity of prayer. Am I correct in this understanding?
JazakAllah

2) One has to use the best judgement here as well.
3) It is transmitted as Sunnah through ijma and tawatur, however, it belongs to customs and etiquttes category, and all matters belonging in this category are mustahibaat (encouraged and recommended), meaning that in normal circumstances, one should try to follow these directives, but if due to any genuine reason, one is unable to follow any such directive, they would not be held accountable. And it doesn’t have any bearing on one’s Salah.

Member December 4, 2021 at 8:48 pmJazakAllah Mr. Umer Qureshi. This all makes sense. I have a couple other questions in mind too, if you don’t mind.
1. Most places I’ve read, it seems that roughly a 40 day period is used as the timeframe in which it is suggested to remove the relevant body hairs. I think I came across an answer by a Hanafi scholar that going beyond the 40 day period is “sinful”, whereas exceeding fifteen days is disliked or something to that effect (although I don’t remember that well). Maybe it falls under Sunnah al-mukaddah, which I believe was mentioned on this forum as being terminology that is specific to the Hanafi school and not a categorization from the Prophet PBUH. But would the 40 day period also fall under being transmitted as Sunnah through ijma and tawatur as well?
2. This is probably an unnecessary question that can be answered through common sense, but I just wanted to confirm whether a person is okay to remove the relevant body hairs over several attempts rather than a single attempt? I’m not sure how the 40 day period would be affected by this.

Moderator December 6, 2021 at 4:03 pm1) The sunnah that has been transmitted in this regard is to shave the pubic hair, and with this directive, it is a natural corollary that shaving of pubic hair means that they should not be allowed to grow and should be shaved on a timely basis. The timeframe of 40 days that we find in Ahadith signify to this fact that they should not be grown to a point where it kills the purpose of this Sunnah, which is to achieve Tazkiya of body.
2) One can do it in several attempts if single attempt makes it unusually difficult for the person. There’s no unsual hardship in Sharia.

I was just going over your answers again and I have a question about the second point you made, where you said that one can shave their hair over several attempts if a single attempt makes it “unusually difficult” for them. What if it isn’t “unusually difficult”, but the person is lazy or it is only a slight inconvenience for them to shave all the hair in one sitting. Is it okay if they remove the remaining hair later? And if yes, must they remove *all* of the hair again or only the remaining hair that was not shaved in the previous attempts.
JazakAllah!
