    Al-Muddaththir – 74:6

    Arabic

    وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ

    Ghamidi sahab writes: The actual word is: تَسْتَكْثِرُ. It signifies an accusative of state. Just as it means “wanting more,” it also means: “thinking something to be more.” Here it is used in this second meaning.

    Tafsir jalalayn says: Al-Muddaththir – 74:6

    English – Tafsir Jalalayn

    And do not grant a favour seeking greater gain (read tastakthiru as a circumstantial qualifier) in other words, do not give something in order to demand more in return: this [stipulation] is specific to the Prophet (s), since he is enjoined to [adopt] the fairest traits and the noblest of manners;

    Which one is correct and why? Surely tafsir jalalayn make more sense as the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم has already been commanded to stand up and warn- so he shouldn’t let worldly gain like trying to get more from favours come in his way. But also Ghamidi sahab’s could be take as a way to further the first command of the surah. Which one is correct?

    How do we know if تمنن comes in it’s meaning of reminding a favour for reward or if it comes in لا تقطع?

      I guess this would be decided by the next word

    Is it because تستكثر is a حال and not a conditional? I think that’s why ghamidi sahab is correct

      So tastakthir would be لا تظن انه عظيم not استكثار for wealth etc- since it isn’t a conditional
