According to the report, yes he did to punish them. It was understood that after Itmaam ul Hujjah, the ones who commit Shirk would be put to death

But isn’t it prohibited to burn somebody as the same hadith suggests ? How can we expect someone like Ali (ra) to not know this command of the Prophet (pbuh) ?
