Forgiveness is encouraged by Allah so Allah will forgive you. Understood…but please clarify…

For example, if someone slaps you, should you forgive. What if the person slaps you again, should you forgive again. How long should this continue? Should we continue to forgive even when the other is not sorry of his behavior or actions and continues. What is the limit when to respond back and fight back?

    1. Should we forgive only if other is sorry?

    2. Should we forgive without other being sorry as long as the person does not continue the bad behavior?

    3. Should we continue to forgive even when the other is not sorry and continues the bad behavior?

If words don’t work, when to fight back to teach other a lesson so the person stops bad behavior and does not subject others to the same treatment?

There are several verses of the Quran that encourage forgiveness (for example, 24:21-22 and 64:14) in hopes of gaining God’s favors and forgiveness. Getting even with someone who inflicted harm upon us has not been made impermissible, however the harm we inflict upon them in return can’t exceed what they inflicted upon us (16:126).

If we understand the message of God in more of a holistic manner, it’s very evident that His test for us includes testing our patience. From experience we also know that the more patient we consciously become, the more contentment we achieve in our lives.
