Its common notion that alcohol cannot be active ingredient in medicine because its unclean and unclean thing cannot cure. However, alcohol can be used as preservative or solvent in medicine.

According to bukhari 5686 (https://sunnah.com/bukhari:5686) and some modern medicine such as Profemin used urine as active ingredient in medicine. My question is how a muslim should address this issue as compared to alcohol as active ingredient?

Quran confined itself to declare alcohol Haram for its being intoxicant. It has many titles but Quran used the word Al Khamr which means intoxicant. It never stated that alcohol or anything impure or unclean can’t be used in or as medicine. Moreover, alcohol is unclean not for its being something real filthy, but because of its being intoxicant.

Salam, does this apply when alcohol is used as a solvent for food?

if in its essence, it is not intoxicant, just a chemical, it can be used. but i am not sure about its being non-intoxicant in its state of pure essence. A chemist may tell help us know it.

JazakAllah Sir, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer this question. I know that Javed Ghamidi said alcohol is permissible as a preservative for medicine, which is why I had the feeling that the case is the same for foods.
