    Ta Ha – 20:123

    Arabic

    قَالَ ٱهۡبِطَا مِنۡهَا جَمِيعًۢاۖ بَعۡضُكُمۡ لِبَعۡضٍ عَدُوٌّۖ فَإِمَّا يَأۡتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّى هُدًى فَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ هُدَاىَ فَلَا يَضِلُّ وَلَا يَشۡقَىٰ

    Al-Baqarah – 2:38

    Arabic

    قُلۡنَا ٱهۡبِطُواْ مِنۡهَا جَمِيعًاۖ فَإِمَّا يَأۡتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّى هُدًى فَمَن تَبِعَ هُدَاىَ فَلَا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُونَ

Why are there two different recounts of what seems to be the same event? A different answer to the condition of obeying the guidance can be understood since perhaps both were said. But why is the imperative verb form in 20:123 in the dual form and in 2:38 the plural version?

These words do not address Adam (sws) and Eve. They in fact address Adam and Satan as two groups. The word of emphasis جَمِيْعًا in the verse makes this very evident. At other instances, for this very reason, plurals are used. This is the explanation given in al-Bayan. But then why is it different anyway? Why is it not dual form in both instances?
