What does God mean in Surah Luqman when he says “He created the heavens without pillars that are visible to you”?
What are these heavens? If it is the sky, we know there is no sky. Isn’t it assuming that there is a canopy above, which is adorned by stars and that it should have fallen towards earth because apparently they are above and whatever is above should fall, and that it is a miracle that they don’t fall without there being any pillars?

He created the heavens (السَّمَاوَاتِ) without pillars that you see and has cast into the earth firmly set mountains, lest it should shift with you, and dispersed therein from every creature. And We sent down rain from the sky and made grow therein [plants] of every noble kind.(Qur’an 31:10)

“Allah is He Who raised up the (السَّمَاوَاتِ) heaven/sky without pillars ” (Quran 13:2)

We understand the (samaa)heaven/sky to be atmosphere in the verse above. The Arabic word “samaa” is translated as atmosphere in this context as it is translated as atmosphere elsewhere in the Quran

Do they not see the birds controlled in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allah. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe. (Qur’an 16:79)

All the oxygen, nitrogen and other particles on Earth’s atmosphere has a combined mass of 5 quadrillion tons.It is attracted to the earths centre by gravity. A falling sky would mean that nearly 10 tons of molecules (roughly the weight of a school bus) would drop on every square meter of earth’s surface.

What prevents the atmosphere from falling down? There is no support structure/no pillars?

IN OTHER WORDS, WHAT PREVENTS SOMETHING THE WEIGHT OF A SCHOOL BUS FALLING ON YOU RIGHT NOW?There is no pillar or any other support structure to protect you.

In the atmosphere, the pressure of the air decreases with increasing altitude. This pressure difference causes an upward force called the pressure-gradient force. The force of gravity balances this out, keeping the atmosphere bound to Earth and maintaining pressure differences with altitude.

This equilibrium is possibly referred to in another verse of the Quran; “And the heaven /sky He raised and imposed the balance” (Quran 55:7)

If the sky here refers to atmosphere. Then how come God says that the heavens are adorned by stars? There surely are no stars in the atmosphere. In fact in Fussilat God says that stars are in the lowest/nearest “samaa”.

It seems the picture is like that of a physical sky which is up and above us and which is adorned by stars and doesn’t fall off because apparently everything falls. The Quran seems to find it a miracle that a physical sky is not falling and that too without any pillars.

Science has not yet explored all seven haveans. Watch the above video. According to cosmologist, Einstein’s theory that this universe is like a soap bubble and is expending, is being discarded; as according to new development in Science they found that there may be other soap bubbles like our universe. In other words there are more than one universe. If we see this finding with reference to Qur’an than possibily there are seven universes and we live in the first universe where Allah has adorned with lamps (stars) same as higher in higher heavens. And the same (lowest) universe, where we live on earth which has an atmosphere/sky(السَّمَاءِ) where according to Qur’an (31:10), Allah sent down rain from the sky (السَّمَاءِ). It is ovious that rain is sent down from atmosphere and not from stars. It appears that anything within the first heaven (first/lowest universe) above (in all directions) the earth surface is called (السَّمَاءِ) , which includes our earth’s atmosphere till the end of this universe, is Sky (السَّمَاءِ).

He created the heavens (السَّمَاوَاتِ) without pillars that you see and has cast into the earth firmly set mountains, lest it should shift with you, and dispersed therein from every creature. And We sent down rain from the sky (السَّمَاءِ) and made grow therein [plants] of every noble kind.(Qur’an 31:10)

Then He completed and finished from their creation (as) seven heavens in two Days and He made in each heaven its affair. And We adorned the nearest (lowest) heaven with lamps (stars) to be an adornment as well as to guard (from the devils by using them as missiles against the devils). Such is the Decree of Him the All-Mighty, the All-Knower.

(سورة فصلت, Fussilat, Chapter #41, Verse #12)

    Allah knows best.

I believe it is the 6 heavens above us that are supported without pillars. We are at the lowest heaven; which is the only one having the lit up stars. The other 6 do not have lit up stars. All these heaven do not collapse onto each other as they are supported by something other than visible pillars. Even in our universe all the starts and galaxies do not collapse onto each other without any visible pillars. Scientists think it may be the dark matter that might be supporting them.
