Recently there was a news in which a couple was caught being intimate (kissing) in a Pakistani airline and people have mixed thoughts about it. Some say this is against our culture which is understandable. Some are saying that in a country where hatred, crime, rape etc are so common, these things shouldn’t be an issue which is also fair enough as other issues should be prioritized. What does Islam say on such issues I mean is it ok to hug or kiss your wife publicly like in western countries or is it a sin?

    Response by Hassan Ilyas Sahab:

Summary (English): There are three important things in the relationship between husband and wife: privacy, protection and adornment. According to the Quran, the spouses are like a dress/covering for each other and sexual relations have been limited within the institution of marriage. Sexual affairs are not supposed to be public and anything which exposes and compromises the sanctity of your body and private parts is strictly forbidden. Therefore such acts are supposed to remain private and be confined between the two of them.

Another situation is that sometimes when we feel an extraordinary emotional moment, we hold hands or hug one another momentarily. That’s somewhat different because it’s a momentary display of happiness and affection, and not strictly sexual. However, different cultures are sensitive to that as well and one should be considerate of that.

Secondly, one should also see things from the perspective of the society and the rights of other people. If your actions make other people, for example families and children who are present out there, uncomfortable, then one must take this into account as well and avoid it.
