    Al-Ma’idah – 5:18

The phrase in question is The ممن خلق part seems to signify that they are simply like other humans – no tribalism.

But the بل أنتم بشر part is interesting. The bible says very often that the Jews are the children of God and that God is the father. So if the Quran is rebuking then with this saying don’t say you are the sons of God rather you are just mortals then what about the bible being replete with this phrase?

If it’s rebuking shirk then why isn’t there a phrase like سبحان الله عما يشركون or something like that.

This is not the description of their shirk, but of their vanity. They never had this idea they were real children of God. Referring to their human origin is not telling them that they are the same like others, but humility of their origin that they should not thing of themselves too great or sacred, and that, they do not have any immunity from the punishment.

But then why mention abnaa when their vanity is captured in ahibbaa? What is the purpose of mentioning it if Allah himself in the Old Testament calls them their father them his children (in a metaphorical sense)

Because then calling themselves ahibbaa may be false but abnaa is technically true- that’s the issue I’m having

This is emphasis that they are His beloved, like His children. They never had this notion that they were His real children. They know by referring to Father and Son that this is metaphor.
