  • What Would Trigger A Revision In Nisab Amount?

Posted by Nadeem on June 19, 2021 at 7:38 pm

Are we obligated to stick to Nisab measure by the amount of gold and silver? What if tomorrow gold and silver become extremely cheap or worthless? Are we neglecting the true purpose of Nisab – Which seems to determine minimum living expenses? The minimum living expenses are different from country to country, state to state, city to city, neighborhood to neighborhoods and even hosehold to household. When and what would trigger a need for Ijtihad?

Ghamdi sb discussed about nisab in this video From 06:26 to 12:56. According to him, if Prophet Mohammad saw has fixed something for nisab there will be no change but when there will be new things then will be ijtihad

Ghamidi Sahib live today said it is not gold or silver but it is the true spirit of a rule that applies. So, if Zakat is on gold or silver the the pupose is to have zakat on wealth. Following the same rule why the spirit of Nisab as minimum living standard can’t be applied outside of gold and silver?

In matters of Ibadah (‘Tabbudi amoor’), we cannot use ijtihaad or reasoning to change a directive based on presence/absence of certain conditions, unless they are explicitly mentioned in the directive. In the absence of any such explicit condition, all matters of ibadah should be adhered to in form as given by the Prophet (sws) Himself (sws).

As far as the nisab (exemption) of zakat is concerned, following is an excerpt from Dr. Shehzad’s reply relevant to your question:

…”As far as the nisab (exemption) of zakat is concerned, it only means that no zakat can be collected below this amount. The nisab rate can be increased by an Islamic state if required. Also, the actual yardstick in calculating the nisab is silver and not gold or both as is generally held. This misconception seems to have arisen from the equation that existed between silver and gold (7.5 tolas of gold = 52.5 tolas of silver) in the times of the Prophet (sws)“.

Please refer to the following discussion with Ghamidi Sahab where he has discussed Zakat and its principles quite comprehensively, which will answer most of your questions related to Sharia of Zakat, including exemptions, nisab and their haqeeqat (illat):
