  • Niyat / Intention Of Namaz

I previously used to make niyat for namaz which obviously we have been taught by our parents and which is in Urdu. This was also a problem for me in masjid as the namaz would start and I couldn’t say the complete niyat so it often worried me. Then I saw an old video of Ghamidi sb in which he said that you can pray without making niyat as the words we are taught are not stated in the Quran etc. So is it ok to just say Allahu Akbar and start?

Is it the same for all other things like wudu and ghusl? As in, I don’t need to utter certain words or think about certain things, like the purpose of wudu? And this may be unrelated, but does Ghamidi Sahb see it as mandatory to see Bismillah before both? JazakAllah!

      No, it’s not obligatory.

JazakAllah. And same for formulating thoughts and words prior to wudu or ghusl? As in, thinking of so in the heart is okay? I think you meant not obligatory for all the questions I asked, so I’m sorry if this is repetitive!

Utterance of specific words is not obligatory, but if someone recites bismillah, its a good act, as it was uswa of the Prophet too.

The intention/Niyyat should be there, and its presence in heart is sufficient.

So is presence of niyyat in heart simply knowing you’re going to do something and nothing more? Like when I sit down with the intention to eat, I’m doing so knowing that I will eat but don’t have to articulate in mind or words.
