  • Is It Permissible To Use Non-food Products With Haram Items?

Posted by Haseeb Faisal on September 27, 2021 at 11:23 am

    Asalamoalaikum,

If a non-food items (e.g., apparel, lotion, soap, detergent, etc.) contains a haram item (e.g., pig, dead animal, etc.), are we permitted to use this item? Is a complete chemical transformation required or is it fine even if the haram items retains its original form in the final product? For example, a paintbrush made out of pig hair.

JazakAllah. But is there any way to explore the following narrative:

It was narrated from Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say on the day of the Conquest when he was in Makkah: “Allaah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of alcohol, dead meat, pigs and idols.” It was said, “O Messenger of Allaah, what do you think of the fat taken from a dead animal which is used for caulking ships, greasing animal skins and which people use to light their lamps?” He said, “No, it is haraam.” Then the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “May Allaah curse the Jews, for Allaah forbade them the fat, but they melted it then they sold it and consumed its price.”

      JazakAllah

We should understand everything in the light of Quran. Hence it will be understood in terms of Quranic directive and sunnah.

There is also the following Hadith:

Once Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) passed by a dead sheep and said to the people, “Wouldn’t you benefit by its skin?” The people replied that it was dead. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “But its eating only is illegal.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2221)

It appears to be in contradiction to the previous one I sent. So how can I reconcile the ahadith in the light of the Quran?

I am not sure about authencity of both hadiths so will not comment on it.
Quran prohibits pigs dead meat etc for eating. Hence, we will always avoid eating such things. About using hides, organ for other purposes will be allowed as actual prohibition is for eating.

I have another question pertaining to this topic. Let’s say there’s a lotion containing an ingredient from pigs. If it is proven that this lotion and its ingredients are absorbed by the skin, would the product be haram? Could one argue that pig has not entered the body? Sorry if this question is petty!
