Quran 2:255 – Who Is God Protecting The Universe Against?
Posted by Faisal Malik on October 1, 2021 at 12:58 pmIn ayatul Qursi, it is stated in the last that Allah is guarding the samawaat and ardh and it does not fatigue him. From whom Allah is guarding the universe? Is there any creature who is a threat to this world and Allah is guarding?

Here’s a translation by Muhammad Asad that might help:
Quran 2:255
Muhammad Asad
GOD – there is no deity save Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsistent Fount of All Being. Neither slumber overtakes Him, nor sleep. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth. Who is there that could intercede with Him, unless it be by His leave? He knows all that lies open before men and all that is hidden from them, whereas they cannot attain to aught of His knowledge save that which He wills [them to attain]. His eternal power overspreads the heavens and the earth, and their upholding wearies Him not. And he alone is truly exalted, tremendous.
You can also watch this videos for Ghamidi sahab’s explanation of the verse:

Member October 2, 2021 at 7:06 amThanks for reply. Yes I have seen Ghamidi Sb’s video. But in this ayat it is not saying that his power is “overspread” it is specifically saying “hifzuhuma” means “guarding”. Allah is guarding samawaat and ardh. Question is from whom Allah is guarding?

1 حَفِظَــهُ, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) aor. ـَ (K,) inf. n. (S, Mgh, Msb,) He kept it, preserved it, guarded it, protected it, or took care of it; (S, K;) namely, a thing; (S;) he prevented it from perishing, or becoming lost; (Mgh, Msb;) namely, a thing, (Mgh,) or property &c.; (Msb;) and hence the saying, (Mgh,) حِفْظٌ is the contr. of نِسْيَانٌ; (M, Mgh;) i. e., it signifies the taking care, being careful; (M;) being mind ful, regardful, attentive, or considerate: (M, K:) [see also 5:] and بِهِ ↓ احتفظ signifies the same as حَفِظَــهُ. (S, Msb.) [Hence,] you say, حَفِظَ المَالَ He kept and tended, or pastured and defended, the camels or the like. (K.) [And حَفِظَ حُرْمَةَ صَاحِبِهِ He was regardful of everything entitled to reverence, respect, honour, or defence, in the character and appertenances of his companion, or friend.] and حَفِظَ السِّرَّ He kept the secret.
This is an excerpt from lanes lexicon. I believe a better translation would be preserves or takes care of in this ayah rather than protect which would perhaps have been وقى

Member October 3, 2021 at 12:31 pmThanks for the reply. So it means Allah is taking care/ preserving not guarding. Yes, in this sense it is ok. But this is ayatul kursi, it is not like any other verse. This ayat tells us about the power, authority, maginificence of Allah. So if we read in this context then guarding should be a better translation as compared to taking care of.

Contributor October 3, 2021 at 12:32 pmI don’t know what evidence there is for this ayah to be read differently. What context would you suggest makes guarding a better translation? The question which you rightly brought up would be them whom is he guarding against which has no answer so wouldn’t make sense

And following is an explanation by Ameen Ahsan Islahi Sahab which sums it up pretty well:

He may destroy this world or entire universe. There are numerous jinns like him. So may be Allah is guarding this universe from iblees and other jinns like him.
