  • What Mistakes Does Sajda Sahw Not Compensate For?

I read that prayers have to be repeated if one makes a mistake with a pillar – Surah Al-Fatiha, Sujud, Jalsa (sitting between Sujud), rukoo. This has caused me a bit of distress because I doubt a lot of mistakes and repeat the prayers a lot. The principle I read about is that if one doubts an action (pillar) in prayer, it is as though they did not perform it and it must be repeated.

My problem is that for example: sometimes in my second sujud I worry that I have not sat for long enough in the previous Jalsa (a pillar). So I return to jalsa, and do a third sujud. Does this invalidate my prayers? Is sajda sahw enough in situations like doubt like this?

The underlying principle of Sahda-e-Sehav as per Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (Sws) is very simple and has nothing to do with pillars of Salah:

If compensation/rectification of a mistake or a doubt is possible, first compensate/rectify it and then offer Sajda e sehaw, and if compensation/rectification for that mistake or doubt is not possible, then just offer simple Sajda e sehaw‘.

The principle that you quoted: “The principle I read about is that if one doubts an action (pillar) in prayer, it is as though they did not perform it and it must be repeated“. This is not a principle prescribed in any religious source.

Therefore, in your particular case, not being able to sit for long enough during Jalsa doesn’t invalidate your second sajda, and neither does it invalidate your Salah. There’s no need for a third Sajda to begin with and if you have done a third Sajda anyway, then you can end your Salah with a Sajda-e-Sehaw.

Please refer to the videos provided in the following thread to understand the underlying concept of Sajda-e-Sehaw:

What you can do is try to make you Salah better through more khushu and try to perform each action of Salah with focus and not with any hurry. Following advice of Ghamidi Sahab will be helpful in how to achieve more Khushu in Salah:
