Medical Errors And Murder
I have been bothered by the idea of medical errors as a medical student. In medicine, we try to do our best for every patient, but there may be situations where we make an unintentional mistake that claims a life. Example: patient was diagnosed with and treated with X. Patient later died and the post-mortem revealed they had Y. An unintentional error was made by the physician that resulted in their death.
In such a case, does the physician have to (i) pay the Diya and (ii) fast for two consecutive months? I am very worried about this. In reality, the number of unintentional mistakes resulting in death may result in bankrupting a physician and them fasting their whole careers. What should our understanding about cases like this be?
