  • Do I Need To Repeat Prayer?

Posted by Haseeb Faisal on December 13, 2021 at 12:48 pm

    Asalamoalaikum everyone,

I was praying dhur and after I finished I thought I might have missed something. So I began praying dhur again, but again thinking that I missed something I stopped midway. However, I thought then that the first time I prayed was probably fine. Will the first time I prayed be accepted as complete dhur even though I intended on repeating but did not finish? Even if yes, do I have to complete that prayer that I started the second time around but did not finish?

    JazakAllah

If you think that you made the complete salah then there’s no need to repeat it. However, if you’re unsure, I would repeat it to be on the safe side:

JazakAllah. I have frequent doubts about my prayers that it’s become distressing at this point, so I am trying to avoid repeating prayer as much as possible after reading some advice online. I think I most likely do read all parts of the prayer, but maybe it’s a problem with my memory or concentration, though I do try to remain concentrated. Is this approach okay in this case and in general?

Yes, Insha’Allah all your prayers will be accepted.

JazakAllah, I appreciate it. InshAllah. And I don’t do Sajda Sahw, thinking that it’s not a problem with adding or subtracting anything from prayer, I’m just having regular doubts. Is this okay?

If you know that you’re doing what you’re supposed to but still having habitual doubts, then there’s nothing to worry about.

On a related note, think about how you can train yourself in order to omit such doubts. For example, you could try keeping a cheap tally clicker in your pocket and click it once every time you’re about to make ruku.

I had a similar issue (and occasionally still do). The way I fixed this was by recording myself on my phone for a few prayers and ignoring my doubts. When I viewed the recordings, I always prayed the correct number of rakats. This helped me build more confidence with my prayer. But as a disclaimer, delete the videos immediately after counting the rakats or you’ll be tempted to play them back for other mistakes which can lead to worse waswasas.

JazakAllah Ms. Sana! I can see that as being beneficial for sure, I’ll definitely try it out if it comes to it.

@faisalharoon JazakAllah Mr. Faisal Haroon. I really think something like that can help me out in remembering, I’m just really confused and stressed out right now. I’ve read a bunch of things on various Islamic sites from swallowing a morsel of solid food to coughing loudly to swallowing phlegm to clearing my throat loudly or making sounds of two letters unintentionally (and so much more) all falling under actions that nullify prayer. I really don’t know what to do, it’s so difficult to pray. And if such natural and simple things nullify prayer, I would constantly be under stress that keeping a tally would nullify my prayer. Maybe I should create a thread inquiring on what things actually nullify prayer because at this point there are very few things that stress me out as much as worship rituals, and I have to perform them five times a day.

Sure you can create separate threads to ask your questions. One suggestion that I can offer you is to keep things simple and ignore Internet fatwas. It should help to always keep in mind that in the matters of ibada God doesn’t want any hardships for us.

JazakAllah, yeah I definitely agree with your line of reasoning. I think I’ll create a thread sometime later today just to clarify.

JazakAllah Mr. Faisal Haroon. I have a created a new thread for this, but I just feel anxious about being held accountable for ignoring information that I might have seen consistently on three or four fatwa sites? Do you have any advice for this?

DISCLAIMER: If anyone that on this thread is stressed out by prayer, I would caution against reading my reply to Mr. Faisal Haroon above (December 14, 2021 at 12:05 pm). Don’t want to cause any further stress.

Allah SWT sees the niyah and sincerity. If you are praying with sincerity, then Allah SWT is Rahim and Kareem. We should have Yaqeen of acceptance all the good deeds we do only for Allah that they will be accepted . It is prescribed to us to do Astaghfaar 3 times after every fardh namaz. Which covers the minor mistakes of Salat. And read

      عُوْذُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطٰانِ الرَّجِيْمِ‎ا

Even during the salah if you cannot concentrate. Shaitan will try his best to put you in doubts but Allah is the savior. Always make dua from Allah for help. Once salah become a habit then inshallah will get the khushu too.

Do Sajda Sahw for the doubt.
