  • Veto Rights Of 5 Countries

How veto rights of 5 powers can be accepted. I have heard Ghamidi sahab saying there are 2 systems prevalent in the world, dictatorship or democracy. I disagree, it’s always dictatorship either by bullet or by ballot. With tools and techniques available there can never be free and fair elections. So democracy is just eyewash. I want to hear his defence to current democracy.

Ghamidi Sahab has alwas said that four democractic values that are universally agreed upon are the biggest achievement of current democratic culture, namely:

      i) Democracy as a mode of peaceful transfer of power

ii) Recognition of basic human rights

      iii) Supremacy of Law

iv) Right for a nation to choose it’s own fate w.r.t its association with a certain country etc.

The application may have not been perfect in all the cases, but it is still a way forward and way better than dictatorship/monarchy. There’s need to appreciate these values and move forward with a better application where remaining hurdles could be removed.

Democracy is indeed a great blessing for human beings. And even in its worst form, it is better than a monarchy/dictatorship.

Following is an interview of Mohamedou Ould Slahi who was imprisoned in Guantanamo for 14 years on wrongful accusation. He, in this interview has praised democracy so many times and how democracy in Germany helped him from wrongful confinement, because he personally experienced the difference between two and had to give up prime years of his career because of dictatorship in his own country.

Democracy has some scope and possiblity of success in very educated societies. You can see how indian democracy that was once hailed as “ajooba” is being used to target minorities. It has become tyranny of majority. It has faltered on all 4 points you cited in your message

Even if we leave the Quranic injunction aside for a little while, at this time the only alternatives to democracy are systems of government formed by a single person or particular a group. In either case the burden of proof in establishing their right to govern lies upon those entities. There’s nothing in the collective human knowledge and experience that can conclusively establish this right.

In the absence of any other viable alternatives, I don’t think that there’s any point in discussing the pros and cons of democracy or pointing towards the failures of democracy which could have a myriad of reasons. For those who are interested in political sciences, their job is to help the world figure out how to improve democracy, rather than simply criticizing it.

I am not a critique of democracy but pointing out lack of system of check and balance. I have sufficiently forwarded a case that true democracy is absent in this world…I quoted example of veto right of 5 powers and state of democracy in India as shining examples of failure of democracy or lack of genuine democracy. Democracy as perceived is a “mirage” and yes I can agree that it is least worse form of governance.
