please guide if recreational hunting is allowed in Islam.

    by recreational hunting it means

1- we get permission from gov and go in forest to hunt deer or rabbits and sometimes kill more animals then required and leave them there and sometimes bring meat with us. during the course of hunting some animals get shot but manage to run away and then die in pain later on though it is not intentional

2- second scenario is hunting in private property where it is assumed that wild animals can destroy fields and eat grass which meant for our own stock and we kill those wild animals (kangaroo, rabbit, fox, deer ) sometimes more than required.

    Generally, is recreational hunting allowed?

There should be a reason for hunting such animals e.g. to get meat of the animal, to get rid of their negative impact etc., and method of killing shouldn’t involve any form of torture for the animals.

To my understanding, if there is lack of food or lack of meat in diet because someone can’t afford it, then hunting is allowed; not for fun or sports. Even then animals must be killed in as much humane manner as possible. The alternative could be to raise domestic animals for feeding.

Regarding killing animals to save crops or humans, utmost effort should be taken to find alternative methods to resolve the problem then simply killing animals. It is normally not the animals encroaching on us but humans expanding into their habitat.

Regarding killing and leaving carcase or killing more than the licensed quantity is not right. In the first case killing animal just for fun is haram. In the second case, there is a danger of overkilling and destroying a species.
