Swearing And Obscene Language
Posted by Zuhair on January 3, 2022 at 8:34 pmPeople generally have a habit of swearing, not to another person, but if something goes wrong or out of frustration. So will it still be considered fawahish and sinful?

Moderator January 3, 2022 at 9:08 pmIf it is being done unintentionally because of some old habit then hopefully there will not be any sin for the person. However, expressing such words on purpose is something that should be avoided at all costs. Irrespective of that fact whether it is being addressed to another person or not, it is still a word of Fawahish, so there can’t be any excuse for it. And if it is being addressed to the other person, then the gravity of act becomes even more severe.
This principle can be inferred from the following verse of the Quran on advertent and inadvertent oaths:
Allah will not hold you accountable for your inadvertent oaths, but He will definitely hold you accountable for oaths you swear with solemn intention. So if such an oath is broken, its atonement is the feeding of ten needy persons of a standard with which you normally feed your own families or the clothing of ten needy people or the liberation of one slave. But whosoever cannot afford these should fast for three days. This is the atonement for the oaths when you have sworn. And be true to that which you have sworn. Thus Allah explains to you His verses that you may be grateful. (5:89)
