    Sura Ahzab tells that the hypocrites were trying to scandalize the house of the prophet. They were trying to get prophet’s wives divorced to make them marry to some other people and that way they might use them against the prophet. Allah shut down this door by declaring that not only the prophet cannot divorce his wives nor can they marry after him. But before this the wives were given the option to leave the prophet if they did not want these restrictions. But none of them left the prophet.

    The wives of Prophet SAW were given the status of ummahat-ul-momineen (mothers of the believers). Due to this status it wasn’t appropriate for any other person to marry them. Even as wives of Prophet SAW it wasn’t appropriate for anyone to take that position.

    That said, I’m a bit puzzled as to how would such a question help anyone in understanding or following the message of Islam?

    Peer naseer ud din naseer sahab once used this ( allah not giving permission to marry Prophet’s wives after his death ) to prove the living of Prophet in this world after his death. Thats where question came from.

      Understood.

      Even if someone wrongly believes that Prophet SAW is still alive, that still has nothing do with the message that he gave us. We can very safely ignore any material that doesn’t add to our understanding of his message, thereby being more productive in focusing on things that really matter.

    The same scandalization was possible after the prophet, if there was possibility that the wives of the prophet could marry others. even if they did not, mischievous people would have been trying,. this would disturb the wives and the society and may cause fight. So they were given the status of mothers to end any prospects of their marriages after the prophet.
