  • Adam And Eve Incident Understanding From Quran Based On Their Maruf Meaning

In the latest 4th episode of conversing Islam,it was stressed on the principle of choosing the “common” or “maroof” or “raaij” meaning of a word when interpreting a verse . My question is , why Ghamidi sahb didn’t follow this principle when interpreting the word ‘Shajar” in Hazrat adam story in sura baqra ? in traditional narrative shajar was interpreted as a Tree, but ghamidi sahb interpreted as “generation’ or ” act of procreation”.Another example is the word “janna”, everybody interprets it as ‘Jannat” but ghamidi sahb interprets it as “Garden on Earth’?

    There are three different things:

    1. meaning of the word

    2. its use

    3. its Misdaaq (the thing intended)

Ghamidi sahib is taking the well known meaning of the words.

then comes the use of the word. we know that words are used metaphorically too and this is to be determined from the text and context of the expression not arbitrarily. The tree alluded to in the episode of Adam tells that after tasting its food, Adam and Eve got naked and they realized their nakedness. This a clear indication that the tree is used as metaphor for sex which they for the first time experienced and they did not know in their innocence that their private parts have another use too.

In the second case, Ghamidi sahib determined the Misdaaq of the word Jannah whose literal meaning is the garden according to him too. This garden was on the earth or in the heavens, this is what he said that it was on the earth it was not the paradise the people will enter after the day of judgement and this opinion is not new.
