Why did Muslims back then have Slaves/ Servants, if they were living a life of simplicity?

Living with simplicity means not being extravagant, and doing all work by yourself.

It does not mean that you have servants on the lineup, doing all the work that you yourself should be doing.

It seems kind of contradictory, how muslims back then lived in minimalist environment, yet made servants do all their work?

Could you explain why muslims had servants in the first place?

Did Muslims not do their work themselves?

Islam inherited slavery from the society as its ingredient. Slaves were engaged in maintaining agriculture, business and served as home servants and masters had children from their slave girls. This system could not be uprooted immediately. A gradual system of Muktabat was introduced according to which slaves could buy their freedom and the society was obligated to help them through Zakat. New slaves were forbidden to make from the prisoners of war. If slaves were freed at once, it would play a havoc with the society. and the slaves would have lost their jobs and shelters.

To be Muslim does not necessary to work with your hands. Those who could afford had slaves to run their affairs. Simplicity is not any obligation.

But sir, taking care of POW did not necessarily mean we had to deem them as slaves.

We could have provided them with shelter, food, clothing, without making them ” earn their freedom “.

We do not do this practice with Free people in Poverty do we?

I had one question regarding this: did the slaves get to keep the money they earned in order to be free, or was that Usurped from them by their master?

As I mentioned earlier, Islam forbade this practice of making slaves of the prisoners of war. So we are not supposed to do it.

The money a slave earned was his masters. but for the law of freedom (Mukatabat) a slave was entitled to take money from someone to give to his master to buy his freedom.

Sorry wrong usage of terms. I meant just because a group were POW did not mean we had to “take away their freedom”. What does this even mean? What can they not do, whilst being servants, that they can do once they are free?

I’m sorry, for my question I meant that the master did not take ALL the money the servant made, right?

Or else he would have needed go start again at square one, defeating the purpose of his labour.

Masters owned slaves and also what they earned. In return they had protection of their masters and shelter to live. Islam forbade making new slaves from the prisoners of war and on the other hand handed them their key to freedom through the law of Mukatabat.
