Zakah can be used for any good purpose, even the building of a Masjid. Quran (9:60) has stipulated the heads on which Zakah can be used and one of them is
فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ
(fi sabilillah): This includes all expenses for serving Islam and for the welfare of the people.
