  • Source Of Doing Masah On Feet: Sunnah Or Hadith?

    ASSALAMUALAIKUM

    1) We get that a traveler can do massah on feet for three days while a resident (non traveler) can do for one day (even if resident doesn’t have any difficulty taking off socks) (if i am right). Does we get this from Sunnah or Hadith or by Quran?

    2) If it’s proved by Hadith only then this is a thing that can be known by other than a Prophet, because how can a Fiqhi from Quran and Sunnah decide to do for resident one day and for travellers three days (like specification of time)?

So then, masah on feet have we got through ijma. But Prophet SAW didn’t start it as religion? Like it is not Sunnah but we have got this through Ijma?

It was not instituted as Sunnah, but it is a kind of action (amal) that was bound to be transferred through amali tawatur of Muslims along with Akhbar-i-Ahad.

But here comes a thing that, we see many people do masah for one day on socks without any reason (as according to them Prophet SAW has permitted). So if that’s right then how can this thing be permitted except by Prophet SAW that you can do masah for one day on socks even without any reason?

The reason is ‘mushaqqat‘ involved in taking off one’s socks and washing one’s feet. This is in line with the same principle of Tayammum mentioned in Quran.

So on that basis the people who have made it a normal routine thing and without any reason do masah, are they doing wrong then?

No they are not wrong because removing socks everytime for Wuzu create the kind of hardship (‘mushaqqat’) for which such a relaxation is in-line with the principle.
