Tracing Definition Of Maruf And Munkar From Sources
Posted by Abdullah AbdulRahman on May 5, 2022 at 6:23 amAssalamualaikum
Can get an explaination (linguistic) on the interpretation of “maruf” and “munkar” as the universal accepted moral values on which whole humanity agrees , instead of those do’s and dont’s that Islam says and whole humanity doesn’t accept them?

I tried to search in Mufradat of Raghib Asfahani and he said ” Al-Ma’ruf: It is the name of every word or deed whose goodness is proved by the intellect or the Shari’ah, and Munkar is the name of every thing which is considered bad according to the intellect and the Shari’ah.”
He said aqal and Shariah, by Shariah and aqal also interest can be said a moral sin but it is not universally accepted.

Quran 30:30:
So, [now that these facts have become evident,] following one God continue to point your face [like your father Abraham] towards his religion. Follow the nature created by God [O Prophet!] on which He has created people. This nature created by God cannot be changed. This only is the straight path but most people know not.
Riba is morally wrong and it’s accepted as such universally.

And does this tell about explain maruf and munkar meaning?

Moderator May 8, 2022 at 5:46 pmThere’s nothing grey about riba. People who earn riba know very well that it’s not good. Eating pig or dead meat are not maruf or munkar.

The definition you provided is good enough to know the meanings of maruf and Munkar. Any Arabic dictionary will tell the same. That what is good and bad with intellect is good and bad with shariah. The injunctions of Deen regarding good and bad within religion are called Amr and nahi. Plural awaamir and Nawaahi like saying prayer and keeping fast etc

And everything which Shariah says is not accepted universally right or wrong?

Universally accepted means overwhelming majority of the human beings accept it, like murder, piety, etc. They may differ in some applications of Maruf and Munkar but everyone accepts the concept and also majority of the applications are universal too.
