One of my friend says that nikah should be in arabic only and no other language as he says that during prophet time everyone spoke in arabic only and he even makes a point that all people recite quran and namaaz in arabic only as per the prophet tradition.. Hence is it true that nikah should only be in arabic language to be valid ?

The analogy of Nikah with Quran and prayer is wrong. Quran is book of God which has to be in the language of the prophet and his addressees of that time. the prayer is a worship rituals in which only the Qirat portion from Quran is in Arabic as Quran is in Arabic, the rest of the supplications in the prayer can be in any language.

Nikah is a social activity not a worship ritual. The essential of nikah is public pronouncement of man and women to be husband and wife. this can be done in any language. moreover, any form of nikah which is considered as socially acceptable nikah (intentionally permanent relation) is acceptable in Islam.
