Darwin raised this question in one of his letters, how would a Merciful God create a world in which parents eat up their offspring? (filial cannibalism)

Design argument states that this world owes its existence to a Greater Intelligence. What possibly would be God’s scheme behind this process? They are not even humans so they are not being tested. One may claim that filial cannibalism fulfills some role in nature. Since God is All-Competent He could have opted for any other mechanism to perform that particular function/role. Why would He opt for filial cannibalism? @UmerQureshi @AhmadShoaib @Irfan76 @faisalharoon

God didn’t tell us why He created a world where animals eat their offspring so there’s no point in speculating. However, there’s nothing in the phenomenon that raises any questions on the mercy of God.

Why is it okay for an animal to consume another animal or a plant, either of which is a living being, but consuming their own offerings should raise questions on the mercy of God?

Rather than arguing from animal behavior, which we still know very little about, we should concentrate on human beings and how God’s message relates to us. We don’t know with any level of certainty how animals are treated upon death, but we know with certainty that the moral sense as well as code given to human beings applies only to human beings.
