Moderator July 28, 2022 at 11:49 pmHe was not sent to Bani-Israel.
Ghamidi Sahab writes in his exegesis:
“Jonah lived around 860-784 BC. He was sent to Iraq for the guidance of the Assyrians. Nineveh was their capital and at that time occupied an area of about 60 square kilometers. The incident of his nation accepting faith is recorded in the Book of Jonah in the following words:
Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.” When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, He relented and did not bring on them the destruction He had threatened. (3:3-10)”

Moderator July 29, 2022 at 1:19 amBeing sent to Nineveh doesn’t necessarily mean that Prophet Yunus had no connection with Bani-Israel altogether. Secondly, Prophet Yunus is considered as one of the Twelve Minor Prophets in Judaism which also indicates some weakness in his prophetic relationship with Bani-Israel.
It is not explicitly mentioned in Quran as a principle that a Rasool must be in all circumstances from people of his target Nation. But we see in history that whenever a Rasool is not a direct member of his target nation, he usually becomes a part of that nation through relationship of marriage in that nation. Same was the case with Prophet Ismael, Prophet Lut, Prohet Yunus and some other Prophets as well.
Please also refer to the comments of Ghamidi Sahab available in the following thread:

Moderator July 29, 2022 at 12:47 amThe practical stage of second phase of prophethood started with Prophet Moses but it was not the culmination point of that scheme. Until it gradually reached to a level of global recognition, as can be witnessed in Bible when Nebuchadnezzar’s II (605-562 BC) attack was underway, the nearby nations were all well aware of Bani-Israel’s Divine status of Shahdah, the first scheme continued in parallel with gradual decline over the time. Therefore, Prophet Yunus’s prophethood must be within that timeline when transition was still in process. Pre-historic timelines can be used for reference and academic purposes, but cannot be fully relied on.

Dr. Irfan Shahzad
Scholar July 29, 2022 at 5:04 amThe relation of Jonah with Bani Israel is not historically established but it seems that he came from Bani Israel. The scheme of prophethood which changed to confine prophethood in the line of Abraham is not mentioned by God, it is rather understood from what actually happened. Meanwhile when Bani Israel was underway to attain the status of Shahadah and to have training in morals to carry forward the mission of prophets, God chose to send Jonah just like the practice has been to warn an important nation of that time.
