We know that Allah has created laws of nature and everything in this world is supposed to happen within those laws. However, in the Quran and Hadith, we read some miracles given to many prophets who performed miracles by the will of Allah. Can these miracles be explained through the laws of nature or are miracles supposed to be beyond the laws of nature? Moreover, does Allah say in the Quran whether He is bound or not bound by such laws of nature?

Laws of nature are generalized descriptions of patterns and regularities in the world. They don’t have any ontic cloud of their own. In other words, a law is just a mathematical equation derived by induction over many observations of how something generally functions in the world.

For example, the Boyle’s law describes a negative relationship between pressure and volume of gas. In all of our experiments the volume of gas under different pressures behaved in a manner that as we increased the pressure, the volume of gas decreased and vice versa. We generalized our observations and called it a law.

Did we conduct our experiments under every single possible condition that can ever exist in our universe? Most certainly not. What if gas was designed to behave like this on every single day except September 26, 2022? What if gas was designed to behave like this in every possible condition except when a certain level of microwave radiation was present in the environment? What if gas was designed to function differently at a particular point in this universe? We can’t be sure. Boyle’s law can be falsified at any time by an observation against the general pattern. Similarly, what if the Creator of this universe orders gas to behave in a different manner at a certain instance of time? The possibility certainly exists.

We know from the Quran that God is all knowing and all powerful. If we have believed in such a God then we should have no reservations about miracles given to prophets at all.
