    Yusuf 12:100

    وَرَفَعَ أَبَوَيۡهِ عَلَى ٱلۡعَرۡشِ وَخَرُّواْ لَهُۥ سُجَّدًاۖ وَقَالَ يَٰٓأَبَتِ هَٰذَا تَأۡوِيلُ رُءۡيَٰىَ مِن قَبۡلُ قَدۡ جَعَلَهَا رَبِّى حَقًّاۖ وَقَدۡ أَحۡسَنَ بِىٓ إِذۡ أَخۡرَجَنِى مِنَ ٱلسِّجۡنِ وَجَآءَ بِكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡبَدۡوِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ أَن نَّزَغَ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ بَيۡنِى وَبَيۡنَ إِخۡوَتِىٓۚ إِنَّ رَبِّى لَطِيفٌ لِّمَا يَشَآءُۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ

    Prostration here does not refer to the one which is done before God; it refers to bending down in the form of kneeling. Showing respect for elders in this manner is a very ancient tradition. In Arabic, the word سَجَدَ is commonly used in this meaning. It is specified by the Bible and the Talmud that the ceremonial prostration was also prohibited in the shari‘ah of the Israelites the way it is in ours. How did the incident mentioned here take place? Imam Amin Ahsan Islahi writes:

    Joseph (sws) shared his throne with his parents as a mark of respect. The rest of the people must have sat where common people generally sit. It seems that after this Joseph (sws) appeared and as was the custom his courtiers and attendees bowed before him in respect. Such was the aura created that these people too spontaneously bowed in respect. (Amin Ahsan Islahi, Tadabbur-i Qur’an, vol. 4, 254)’

    The actual Arabic is خروا له ساجدين. This literally means- fell to him in prostration.

    This is the same phrasing is used here:

    ﴿أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَنۡعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِم مِّنَ ٱلنَّبِیِّـۧنَ مِن ذُرِّیَّةِ ءَادَمَ وَمِمَّنۡ حَمَلۡنَا مَعَ نُوحࣲ وَمِن ذُرِّیَّةِ إِبۡرَ ٰ⁠هِیمَ وَإِسۡرَ ٰ⁠ۤءِیلَ وَمِمَّنۡ هَدَیۡنَا وَٱجۡتَبَیۡنَاۤۚ إِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ خَرُّوا۟ سُجَّدࣰا وَبُكِیࣰّا ۩﴾ [مريم ٥٨]

    So this refers to actual sajda that we do in salah

    So why would sajda of respect be haraam in our shariah?

    Situation (context) determines the meaning of a word. The former is against a human, in a court, in a manner the bowing is made before a king. and the latter is before God, so it can be the actual Sajda, the way it is done on such occasions by God-fearing people.

    The latter has been appointed as a sign of worship and gratitude to God only. This is the gesture of the lowest humility, which is not supposed to be done to anyone else other than God.

      Yes but the words itself are falling down in prostration. If it was simply سجدوا له maybe I could sympathise.

      But it’s just an assumption that sajda is haraam to humans in our shariah which leads to the assumption that the sajda that yusuf’s صلى الله عليه وسلم parents and brothers did to him was not falling onto the ground even though those are the exact words of the verse.

      In Japanese culture, this sajda is done to humans to this day so it is possible it was the same in Egypt at the time.

      But these are all tangents- there is no clear reason given in your reply as to why the exact same phrase should be taken differently. Nothing in the context necessitates the conclusion you have come to.
