    Hello there

    Assalamualaikum,

    My question is that sometimes we hear some people of knowledge say that showing off blessings, or that the blessings be heard of can be show off etc, like a person showing off his wealth or status etc that this is also Riya (dikhawa)

    So my question was what is the Islamic concept of Riya (show off), is it that, one mentions his own blessings or good traits to others (like wealth or good knowledge of science) so that other people think high of him and he wants to make people think great and high and think big of him and praise him internally and externally like “Wowww, this man is very knowledgeable and very smart ,Wowww”

    Or is it like one should not mention his good traits or blessings to others, in itself. Even if his intention is not that people think high and big of him. For example an I.T technician mentions his good knowledge of computer to others, not to make them think high of himself. But to bring into their knowledge about this so that they can fulfill their needs like fixing broken computers or building a software in future and by benefiting them by working for their problem, the technician also gets a chance for earning. In other words he does not mentions it with intention to make people think high of him, but to make them think that he can work for their problems of computers and in return for it earns money for doing it. So that wouldn’t come under show off right?

    @irfan76 and sir also by looking at Ayat 55 of Surah Najam, where it says

    “Therefore do not ascribe praise/purity to yourselves.” [53:32]. (Tafsir Ibn al-Arabi, 3/59)

    So can it be said with this ayat that praising or telling someone our traits or skill, is not permissible?

    In a website , it was written that Ibn Arabi while talking about Hazrat Yusuf in surah Yusuf

    “He [Yusuf] said [to the King of Egypt]: ‘Put me in charge of the storehouses of the land; I’m an expert custodian.’ (Qur’an, 12:55)

    Says about this like;

    Ibn al-‘Arabi

    “Yusuf said that because they did not know his situation, so he wanted to describe himself. Such situations are an exception to the Ayah: “Therefore do not ascribe praise/purity to yourselves.” [53:32]. (Tafsir Ibn al-Arabi, 3/59)

    As he said that this situation is exception to this Ayah, so by this Ayah can it be said that generally it’s not permissible?

    This is the matter of something bad in the intention. if there is nothing bad in the intention no question arises. This badness is to be decided by the person’s conscience. An act may be showing off to one but might not be to the one who is showing.

    Riyakari is only in matters which are supposed to be done for Allah.

    Showing off blessings of God upon one or showing one’s knowledge or skill, in such cases, if the intention is to belittle others, it is arrogance, otherwise not.
