  • Did The Sahabah Stopped People From Narrating Ahadith?

    Hello there,

I have seen in a few articles that Hazrat Abu bakr had burned the books of hadith and Umar jailed people for narrating and spreading hadith?

I have heard that in start hadith were not allowed because of fear of mixing it with Quran, but then later when this fear finished, it was made permissible. So if the above report is true then why did they stop it from being narrated etc?

It is not that narrating Ahadith were not allowed, it was rather discouraged to narrate Ahadith excessively. It is sound reporting that Abu Bakr burnt his collection of Ahadith. It was because they were very careful not to ascribe anything to the prophet which he did not say or meant. It would distort a part of religion. It shows that they knew that Religion is not dependent on Ahadith. Secondly, Umar feared that people would discard Quran for Ahadith as it had happened to Jews.
