There is no such concept in Islam.

All the narrations in this regard are either weak or fabricated w.r.t their chain of transmission and none of them is reliable enough to be attributed to Prophet Muhammad (sws) (Please see [Foot Note 1]). Even if the chains were sound, still they would have to be understood in the light of the framework established by Quran and Sunnah for intercession on the day of judgement. Following is a summary in this regard:

    i) only God has the authority of intercession. Without His permission, no one can intercede for anyone (as per Quran 39:43-44 & Quran 21:26-27).

ii) even after being permitted by God to speak, intercession shall be possible only for those about whom God pleases. No one shall be able to say anything about anyone out of his own will (as per Quran 21:28 & Quran 20:109-110).

iii) the person who is acceptable to God to be interceded for – about him too whatever will be allowed to be said would be the absolute truth (as per Quran 78:38).

Therefore, all narratives on this topic should be understood in the light of this view of the Quran and anything which contradicts this view should be ignored regarding it to be the handiwork of the narrators.

(Further Details on Intercession: Discussion 10437)

These narratives cannot be accepted on the basis of their content either, since they stand in contradiction to Quran where apparently Hafiz of Quran has been given absolute authority to intercede for a specific number of people who otherwise deserved Hell.

The only notion/interpretation which can be acceptable is when a Hafiz of Quran who lived life as per guidance of Quran and earned a high rank in paradise on merit, is allowed by God to intercede for his family members for whom the decision of mercy has been first made by God on the principle of Justice (as opposed to the notion that they deserved Hell). Narrations (with sound chain) of this sort can also be found for a martyr (‘shaheed’) as well (Please see [Foot Note 3]).

Another variant to narratives on Hafiz-e-Quran which can also be acceptable relate to a pious Hafiz-e-Quran who earned Paradise with his good deeds and his parents will be given a special cloak as a reward (Please see [Foot Note 2]). This also relates to those parents who have already earned paradise on merit and can be understood in the light of Quran where instance of raising of levels after one becomes eligible for Jannah is mentioned:

    وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَاتَّبَعَتْهُمْ ذُرِّيَّتُهُمْ بِإِيمَانٍ أَلْحَقْنَا بِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَمَا أَلَتْنَاهُمْ مِنْ عَمَلِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ بِمَا كَسَبَ رَهِينٌ

Those who have accepted faith, and their children too followed them with any level of faith, We shall unite their children with them [in their level] and not even slightly diminish the reward of their deeds. [This is because] each individual is in pledge for his earning. (Quran 52:21)

    B. Intercession for 7 family members:

There are some other narrations which mention intercession for seven family members:

Heard from Abu Darda that Prophet Muhammad (sws) said “whoever recites two hundred verses with deep thought in a day obtains the right to intercede seven dead people around his grave, and God eases the punishment for his parents, even if they were idolaters”.

This narration comes to us through following chain of narration:

From khalf bin yahya from Ismael bin Ayyash from Bahir bin Saad from Khalid bin Madan from Abu Darda.

    Weakness Attributed to:

    i) Khalf bin Yahya (Liar/Kazzab) [See: Abi Hatim’s Kitab-ul-Jarah wa Tadeel-3/372 (Number 1697) AND Mizan-ul-itedal by Imam Dahabi-1/663 (Number 2550)]

ii) Khalid bin Madan (According to Imam Ahmed, he is not proven to have heard from Abu Darda).

    [See: Tehzeeb al-Tehzeeb by Ibn-e-Hajr Asqalani-3/118-120 (Number 222)]

    C. Intercession for Parents Only:

    ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُول الله صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ” مَنْ حَفَظَ الْقُرْآنَ نَظَرًا خَفَّفَ عَنْ أَبَوَيْهِ الْعَذَابَ وَإِنْ كَانَا كَافِرَيْنِ “

Through primary chain of narration from:

Muhammad bin Muhajir from Abi Muawiya from Ubaidullah bin Umar Al-Umri from Nafi from Ibn-e-umar
