The overall status of this hadith is authentic.

This is not clear why the prophet avoided hearing the sound and let Ibn Umar hear it. No prohibition of music can be extracted from it. It is possible that the prophet might have been receiving revelation or remembering God or thinking about something and did not want to be distracted.
