Buraida (ra) reported on the authority of his father that Allah’s Apostle (ﷺ) said:

“He who played Nardashir (a game similar to backgammon) is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine.” (Sahih Muslim 2260)

Is it Haram to play the games, which involves dice. Many scholars prohibits any game which involves Dice (incl. Ludo, Backgammon, etc), and base their fatwa on this Hadith. Kindly clarify.

The criteria of prohibition, other than the dietary shariah, has been presbribed in the Quran, 7: 33

Say: My Lord has only forbidden lewd acts, whether open or hidden and usurping rights and wrongful oppression [339] and that you associate with God that for which He did not send down any sanction and that you fabricate something about God that you know not.

These are five categories. Playing with dice is not itself haram, but due to a haram cause it becomes haram, that is, too much indulgence in it, which makes man forgetful of his duties towards God and people. This is Ithm, usurping the rights of God and people. If the same cause is found in, for example, playing cricket, the same ruling will be extended there too. and if one is not neglectful of one’s duties while playing such things, he incurs no blame. However, one should be aware of the company one is playing with, that it might not lead him to negligence.
