Quran 72:25 – Is It Possible To Tell Whether Qiyamah Is Near According To Quran?
Posted by Samama Fahim on February 26, 2023 at 12:48 pmSay, “I do not know if what you are promised is near or if my Lord will grant for it a [long] period.” (Sura Jinn, 25)
If Rasoolullah couldn’t tell whether Qyamah was near or would take a long time to come, does this mean that it should not be possible for him to give us the knowledge of the signs of its nearness, that it is generally never possible to tell whether its near, looking at the signs?

Quran 72:25 – Is It Possible To Tell Whether Qiyamah Is Near According To Quran?

Scholar February 26, 2023 at 9:19 pmThe prophet has told about the signs of doomsday. It is mentioned in the famous Hadith e Jabrail:
The man said, “Tell me about the final hour.” The Prophet said, “The one asked does not know more than the one asking.” The man said, “Tell me about its signs.” The Prophet said, “The slave-girl will give birth to her mistress and you will see barefoot, naked, and dependent shepherds compete in the construction of tall buildings.”
The prophecies are fulfilled. The institution of slavery is no more and the Arab Bedouins are competing in building tall buildings.
Another sign given in the Quran is the emergence of Gog and Magog (Yajuj Majuj). These are the descendants of the third son of Noah, whose Japheth. These are the nations of Central and Far East Asia, Europe, Australia and America. Still, it is not possible to tell how exactly near is the Doomsday. But it is not very far away.

Scholar March 1, 2023 at 5:04 amNo, The prophet did not say he does not know its nearness. He said he does not know when it would come.
In some other sayings, he clearly tells that Doomsday is near after him.

And it is the prophet who’s saying that he does not know whether it’s near or far so the time measurements should be those of humans.

While on other occasions, when this context is not there, he told that the final hour is not very far as he is the last prophet, and after him comes doomsday. He told its nearness in many ways.

Scholar March 1, 2023 at 5:08 amThe time for God is relatively different from ours. To God, His one day is equal to our one thousand days and even more.
They are asking you to hasten the punishment, whereas [since God has threatened them with punishment; so] God shall never break His promise. [They should know that] one day of your Lord is equal in count to your one thousand years. (22: 47)

Moderator March 7, 2023 at 5:32 amIt needs to be pointed out that the verse from Quran quoted in the question 72:25 is not about Qiyamah, rather it is about the time of divine punishment on the direct addressees of the Prophet (sws) under itmam-e-hujjat.
It can by extension be linked to Qiyamah (as mentioned in Quran 72:24), since divine punsihment under itmam-e-hujjat is start of Qiyamah in a sense for the direct addressees of the Prophet who are subjected to such punishment, but the verse is not specifically talking about that Qiyamah.
Another example of such transition can be seen in Quran 6:130 to 6:131

Member March 13, 2023 at 4:15 pmWhat are the reasons to say that 72:25 is about divine punishment under itmam-e-hujjat and not Qayamah? In fact, Allah SWT says:
People ask you concerning the Hour, say: “The knowledge of it is with Allah only. What do you know? It may be that the Hour is near!” (Al-Ahzab 33:63)
So the question may well have been about Qayamah. People did ask him such questions. Moreover, in this ayat, Rasoolullah says that Qayamah may be near. That seems to say that Qayamah will materialize without any prior signs.

Moderator March 17, 2023 at 6:17 amSince the direct addressees of The Prophet (sws) had to first face divine punishment in this world as per Sunnat of Allah, therefore using of timeline of sooner or some time later here could be relavant for them w.r.t this divine punishment only. As for Qiyamah, their day of judgement would start right after their death because sooner or later doesn’t matter after their death. This seems to be the inclination of Ghamidi Sahab as well if you read Al-Bayan, specially footnote 43 (https://www.javedahmedghamidi.org/#!/quran?chapter=72¶graph=2&type=Ghamidi).
In diction of Quran, this punishment under law of itmam-e-hujjat and Qiyamah are same in a broader sense as pointed out by Dr. Irfan Shahzad Sahab and Molana Islahi Sahab. Therefore, if someone chooses it solely in the meaning of punihsment of Qiyamah, then there is room for that as well.
It is in principle true and explicitly clear from Quran that only Allah knows the exact time of Qiyamah and it is one of those unseen informations about the future, whose knowledge has not been shared with any other creation of Allah. But the question is has Allah chosen not to share any signs at all? the answer to this is no, Allah has given us signs about Qiyamah in Quran. The rise of Gog Magog being one of the major signs which changed the whole history of the world, was prophesized in Quran and gradually we are moving towards that condition where they would be charging from every valley and collide like waves of water and Qiyamah will emerge from that chaos. Therefore, it is not far-fetched that Prophet Muhammad (sws) was also given and/or shown in Roiya some signs of Qiyamah in addition to the ones mentioned in Quran. Even after these signs, no one can claim to know that exact time of Qiyamah.

Scholar March 14, 2023 at 12:02 amIt may include both kind of Azab, as stated by Mawlana Islahi
